Plea against featuring national anthem in movie halls
The supreme court's controversial order mandating moviegoers to stand up when the national anthem is featured in cinema halls before every show found criticism for within the highest judiciary itself.
Supreme court judge, justice D.Y Chandrachud, on Monday lashed out at the logic behind November 30, 2016, order saying there is no need for Indian to "wear his patriotism on his sleeve".
Moral policing
"Next thing will be that people should not wear Tshirts and shorts to movies because it will amount disrespect to the national anthem.... where do we stop moral policing, justice Chandrachud was part of a three-judge Bench led by Chief justice of India Dipak Mishra hearing a petition filed by the Kodungallar Film Society in Kerala to recall the November order.
Incidentally, it was a Bench led by Justice Mishra, before he became Chief justice, which passed the order in November 2016 making it mandatory for the movie halls to play the national anthem before every show.
Why make a show of patriotism?
