Center can now shift troops from Bengal

Law and order in Darjeeling is state's problem, SC tells govt.

Violence broke out in Darjeeling and Kalimpong after the revival of Ghorkhaland
movement

"Law and order is your problem," the Supreme Court told the Mamata government on Friday and allowed the Centre to withdrawn seven companies of the Centre police forces stationed in the restive Darjeeling and Kalimpong district of West Bengal for deployment in poll-bound states.

Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat go to the polls in November and December.

'Deployment takes time'

Additional Solicitor-General Maninder Singh, appearing for the center, said the troops were needed for the upcoming elections.

"It takes a long time for the movement of these troops", he said.

The center agreed with the suggestion made by a Bench, led by Cheif minister of India Dipak Mishra, a tp withdraw seven companies of the districts, while eight of the total 15 deployed there to stay back.

Violent stir

The districts had witnessed a spate of violence following the resurgence of the Gorkhaland movement.
The Centre had appealed to the Supreme Court against a recent Calcutta High Court order restraining it from withdrawing troops deployed in the two districts.
